The twin settlements of Berlin and Cölln arose in the early 1200s on the Spree River in northeastern Germany. The prosperous trading towns merged in 1432, not long after the Hohenzollern rulers of the state of Brandenburg moved in. Plagues and the Thirty Years’ War devastated early modern Berlin, but it bounced back to become a magnet for intellectuals and artists as the seat of the new Prussian kingdom from 1701. The famous Brandenburg Gate was finished in 1791; just fifteen years later, Napoleon was marching through it in triumph.
Berlin became the capital of the new German Empire in 1871. The city was wracked by chaos after the first World War and nearly demolished by the Allies in the second. Postwar Berlin was divided between the Soviets and NATO powers yet lay fully within East Germany, necessitating the Berlin Airlift in 1948. The Berlin Wall split the city from 1961 until 1989, when Soviet influence collapsed and citizens tore down the hated barrier. Berlin still grapples with the legacy of the Cold War, but it has regained its status as one of the grand cities of Europe.
